Vascular Mineralocorticoid Receptors: Linking Risk Factors, Hypertension, and Heart Disease

MR in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells are decisive mediators of cardiovascular remodeling. They contribute to blood pressure regulation and link cardiovascular risk factors and disease. Different cellular and molecular mechanisms that are involved in these effects could be identified including inflammation, reactive oxygen species production, and altered ion channel activity. These experimental findings provide the mechanistic rationale for the clinical use of MR antagonists.
